Learn more about the technology of the future in an interview with our software developer David
David has been part of the Soloplan team since 2021 and developed a strong passion for artificial intelligence (AI). The 25-year-old software developer already started programming ten years ago. However, programming is not the only thing that fascinates him: The area of artificial intelligence particularly impresses David. The key moment for his enthusiasm regarding this topic was the release of ChatGPT.
“The way artificial intelligence is capable of writing a poem just as well as a human being within seconds is stunning. The mere fact that technologies like this work at all amazes me!” says David.
He completed his studies in informatics at the University of Kempten with outstanding results. His bachelor thesis covered the topic “Accelerating Enterprise Software Engineering with Large Language Models (LLMs)”. These are technologies such as ChatGPT and similar programs. His bachelor thesis covered the theoretical basics of LLMs as well as the development of a code review bot for Soloplan. This newly developed tool is designed to help keep the code quality high and thus allow for more efficient development. In his thesis, David recognised that AI can be used and integrated in many other company areas. This is already happening at Soloplan.
Currently, David is focussing on the further development of the code review bot, the training of internal employees in the area of AI and the support of the Customer Solution Management (CSM) department. His goal is to relieve his team by the targeted use of AI and to obtain faster results.
CarLo is already benefiting tremendously from the developed AI tools, such as the AI chatbot CarLo Assistant, AI-based document processing and the Transport Intelligence project. The AI functions are continuously being expanded and the knowledge of the employees regarding the latest technology is always kept up-to-date.
With this basic idea in mind, David and a colleague visited the second innovation meeting of the company Agile Robots in Kaufbeuren in the Allgäu region last December. Guests from the world of economy, research and politics attended, among them a member of the German Bundestag and the president of the University of Kempten. Agile Robots combines AI and robotics, a very interesting future field. This technology is currently still in the early stages of development and it will be exciting to find out which innovations will be developed in the coming years.
“Prof. Dr. Schirmeier’s talk was truly fascinating. It was about the AI development in Germany compared to other big players, such as China or the USA. I realised: We have to dare to take part in it!” David reports about the event.
Regarding CarLo, functions such as searching for and obtaining information on company data, the automatic use of functions by means of AI and possibly also a language interface could be conceivable in the future.
Of course, there are also aspects of artificial intelligence that must be viewed in a critical light: When using AI, so-called “hallucinations” can still occur. This is a phenomenon where an AI system provides incorrect or invented information that is not based on real data or the reality. This is why it is essential that a human being controls the result and always has the final say. Furthermore, sensitive data must be sufficiently protected; however, David makes a clear statement in this regard:
“Sensitive data must be treated appropriately. At Soloplan, we take data protection very seriously. Depending on how critical the data is, we use either servers in the European Union or an AI server of our own that is located in Kempten.”
In addition to the numerous possibilities opened up by using AI, other areas also pose threats, for example the misuse of this powerful tool. Even now, deceptively realistic visual and acoustic data can already be generated by means of artificial intelligence. This unfortunately opens doors for fake news that, subsequently, is misused and spread to the public as misinformation.
David sees a lot of potential in the medical and financial sectors. He believes that AI could support and relieve the staff. Even in the near future, artificial intelligence could already assist doctors in making diagnoses or support the development and production of new drugs. In the financial sector, AI could help in fraud detection and customer consultation.
Will AI affect the revenues of companies? The developer has a clear opinion:
“Definitely. I would even say that the use of AI will be indispensable for a competitive position. This is exactly why we at Soloplan started to work on AI solutions for ourselves and for our customers early on.”
In order to be able to implement these plans, good communication is the key to success and existential for a successful implementation of AI in the daily work of most professional fields.
This sector is evolving very quickly; thus, it will be exciting to see what innovations await us in the next years. Where does David see himself ten years from now? He says: “Ten years is a very long time, but ideally, I would like to be the leader of a team of four to eight people. I would really like to have a mixture of management and development. Of course, in the best-case scenario, at Soloplan.”
